Carl Cares Bears is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization which began its infancy in 2004 and has now become a fully functional organization to honor and remember our dad, Carl Bates. Our dad was the most loving and giving person we have ever known. He always spoke words of wisdom, praise, and encouragement. If you wanted/needed someone to pray for you or with you, he was there. If you needed someone to talk to, he was there. If you needed food, shelter, or clothing, he was there. Or if you just simply wanted someone to hang out with, he was there. More than anything, he would share the Word of God with everyone. Our father began battling heart disease in his early forties (1983). While most of us may have given up, he fought even harder. He knew his Faith in God would see him through. He prayed that God's will be done and promised to go where God would have him be. As the years went by and multiple treatments and surgeries were tried, it was determined that he was in need of a Heart Transplant. August 1992 he received the call that a heart was awaiting him. The transplant was a success. Doctors told him to plan to remain in the hospital for 3 months post-transplant. There is one thing the doctors may not have taken into account: He was relying on the Great Physician, not man. With that said, 30 days to the day he was released from the hospital.
His faith still strong, he continued to serve God. He began to write and sing his own Gospel music; and what a beautiful voice was heard.
About 2001 he began his Teddy Bear collection. Something that may seem small to others, was indeed special to him. May 2003 his kidneys had begun to shutdown due to the side effects of the immunosuppresant drugs that were necessary to sustain the transplant. The physicians determined hemodialysis was necessary, therefor peritoneal dialysis was started immediately. On the evening of May 20, 2003 he was taken into surgery to insert a graft for hemodialysis. The next morning, May 21, 2003,around 0900 we received the call that our dad had passed.

Though he was our angel here on earth, we also understood that God was calling him home.

We love and miss you daddy,

Sean, Cherie, & Johnny Wayne
